The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has vowed to go to any lengths necessary to protect Nigeria's democracy and prevent the country from descending into instability ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) published on February 1, 2026, PDP Caretaker National Vice-Chairman (South-South), Emmanuel Ogidi, acknowledged internal challenges within the party but expressed strong resolve to rebuild cohesion and forge broad political alliances.
Ogidi emphasized the PDP's role as Nigeria's only viable opposition, stating, “We are going to fight for that cause; we will do whatever it takes to ensure that we have democracy; if we do not have democracy, then we will have a banana republic.”
He further affirmed the party's determination not to disappoint Nigerians, adding, “We want to do whatever it takes and we are determined.”
Ogidi revealed plans to reach out to figures in other parties, including the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), to build coalitions or shift support away from the APC, which he accused of prioritizing electoral campaigns over addressing governance challenges.
The PDP positioned itself as a stabilizing force committed to safeguarding democratic institutions, promoting national unity, and providing a credible alternative to the APC, warning that continued erosion of democracy could lead to severe national crises.
