Ubani Denies Any Link to Malami, Slams Malicious Publication as Contempt of Court

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Dr. Monday Ubani, has strongly rejected any association with the embattled former Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), describing recent media attempts to tie him to alleged criminal activities as reckless, malicious, and in direct contempt of an existing court order.

In a statement issued through his solicitor, Nkem Okoro, Dr. Ubani condemned a recent publication that mentioned his name in connection with a sensational criminal narrative, insisting there are no facts, documents, witnesses, or any identifiable link whatsoever to support the claims.

The legal team described the publication as defamatory and a clear violation of a subsisting court injunction restraining the writer from making further reputation-damaging statements against Ubani.

“The casual insertion of a person’s name into a criminal story without any particulars does not constitute evidence or legitimate public interest disclosure. It is nothing short of character assassination and an abuse of media freedom,” the statement read in part.

Dr. Ubani categorically denied having any professional, financial, administrative, or personal relationship with Malami, emphasizing that no dealings, transactions, or interactions of any kind exist that could justify the circulated allegations.

His lawyers pointed out that the complete lack of factual details in the publication only highlights the baseless and mischievous intent behind the claims, warning against sacrificing reputations for the sake of sensational headlines.

The statement further revealed that “robust civil and criminal enforcement processes” have already been activated against the author for what the legal team termed serial defamatory publications and repeated acts of contempt of court.

These legal actions, according to the statement, will be pursued diligently to their logical conclusion.

Dr. Ubani’s team reiterated that if anyone possesses credible evidence against him, the appropriate venue for such matters is the courtroom, not media trials, open letters, or unrestrained public platforms.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has debunked rumours linking the former Attorney-General, Abubakar Malami, to terrorism financing.

Speaking during a live television programme, Olukoyede described the allegation as false and entirely unfounded, clarifying that the EFCC never investigated or charged Malami in connection with terrorism financing.

He explained that the charges filed against the ex-AGF at the Federal High Court relate exclusively to money laundering, and that suggestions of terrorism financing stem from speculation and third-party narratives rather than any official EFCC position or communication.

Both developments underscore ongoing tensions surrounding reputation management, media responsibility, and the boundaries of public discourse in high-profile legal matters.
