The Federal Government has earmarked a total of N10.61 billion for the overhaul of engines on the Gulfstream G550 aircraft assigned to Vice President Kashim Shettima over a three-year period, according to an analysis of appropriation bills from 2024 to 2026.
The aircraft, with registration number 5N-FGW, received the largest single allocation for engine overhaul within the Presidential Air Fleet, representing 55 per cent of the cumulative N19.27 billion budgeted for engine maintenance across the entire fleet under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
Budget documents reviewed by The PUNCH revealed a significant escalation in the funding for the vice president’s aircraft engines:In 2024, N1.24 billion was allocated.
This rose sharply to N5.51 billion in 2025 — a 345 per cent increase.
The allocation then moderated to N3.86 billion in 2026.
The substantial funding for the G550 assigned to the vice president stands out when compared with maintenance provisions for other aircraft in the Presidential Air Fleet, underscoring the priority given to ensuring the operational readiness of the aircraft used for official duties.
The figures have reignited public debate over expenditure on the Presidential Air Fleet amid ongoing discussions about fiscal responsibility and the cost of governance in the country.
Neither the Office of the Vice President nor the Presidential Air Fleet has issued an official response to the revelations as of the time of this report.
