Elections in Nigeria Not Completely Decided by the Electorate – Tambuwal

Senator Aminu Tambuwal, representing Sokoto South Senatorial District, has declared that elections in Nigeria are not entirely determined by the votes of the electorate, pointing to systemic manipulations that distort the will of the people.

Tambuwal made the candid remarks during an interview on Arise Television’s ‘Prime Time’ programme on Monday.

“It’s not completely decided by the electorates. I can say that and without mincing words,” Tambuwal stated.

He explained that discrepancies often arise at various stages of the electoral process, including collation at polling units, wards, local governments, states, and the national level.

“We know quite often times that at coalition level or be it at the polling unit, at the ward level, at local government level, at the state level or even at the national level, things happen that misrepresent what voters actually vote,” he added.

The former Sokoto State Governor and ex-Speaker of the House of Representatives attributed these issues to politicians exploiting loopholes in the system, alongside compromised officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and involvement of the courts.

“The system is breaking away through the INEC, the court and the politicians because the politicians try to find corners to cut. So wherever there’s a loophole, politicians take advantage of that loophole,” Tambuwal said.

His comments highlight ongoing concerns about the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process, including allegations of result manipulation, institutional compromise, and the need for comprehensive reforms to ensure elections truly reflect the electorate’s choice.

Tambuwal, a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has previously advocated for improvements such as full electronic transmission of results, even if it risks personal or party losses.

The statement comes amid broader national discussions on electoral credibility, governance challenges, and the future of democracy in Nigeria ahead of upcoming political cycles.
