The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has addressed growing public concerns following Nestlé UK's voluntary recall of specific SMA Infant Formula batches in more than 50 countries.
In an official statement, NAFDAC Director-General Prof. Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye clarified that all Nestlé infant formulae currently approved and available for sale in Nigeria remain safe for consumption and are not part of the recalled batches.
The international recall was initiated as a precautionary measure due to the potential presence of cereulide, a heat-resistant toxin produced by certain strains of Bacillus cereus which can cause nausea and vomiting.Prof. Adeyeye emphasized the following key points:
The SMA and NAN ranges of infant formulae marketed in Nigeria are manufactured at Nestlé’s Tuas Factory in Singapore.
These products are fully registered with NAFDAC and have been verified as distinct from the affected UK batches.
No evidence suggests that any of the recalled products have entered the Nigerian market through official channels.
The agency issued the public notice to maintain transparency about global food safety developments, even though the risk of local exposure is considered minimal.
NAFDAC also cautioned against potential risks from unauthorised importation, online purchases from unverified sources, or products personally carried into the country during international travel.
Parents, guardians, and caregivers are advised to continue using only NAFDAC-registered infant formulae and to report any suspicious or unregistered products to the agency.
NAFDAC reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to rigorous monitoring and consumer protection to ensure the safety of food and drugs in Nigeria.
