Two Officers Killed as Gunmen Attack Police Checkpoint in Enugu

The Enugu State Police Command has launched a massive manhunt following a deadly Friday night ambush that left two police officers dead.

The attack, attributed to suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its militant wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), took place along the busy Agbani Road.

The incident unfolded on the night of January 15, 2026, at a "stop-and-search" point situated directly in front of the Police Detective College. According to official reports, the encounter was brief but violent. Gunmen opened fire on a Police Distress Response Squad (DRS) team without provocation.

Two officers sustained fatal gunshot wounds. While rushed to a nearby hospital, they were confirmed dead by medical personnel.

Following the shootout, the attackers set the police patrol vehicle ablaze. Police later recovered a Lexus 330 SUV used by the assailants. The vehicle, which had been previously snatched from its owner, was found riddled with bullet holes from the exchange of fire.

This latest assault marks the second fatal attack on police personnel in the Enugu metropolis within a single month. Just weeks prior, on December 27, 2025, two officers were killed and their patrol van incinerated in a similar evening attack at Zik Avenue.

While initial unofficial reports suggested as many as four casualties in Friday’s incident, Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe clarified the toll at two, noting that several attackers likely escaped with gunshot injuries after the police returned fire.

Commissioner of Police Mamman Giwa has ordered tactical and intelligence units to deploy all available resources to track down the "subversive criminal elements."

"The Command remains resolute and committed to ensuring that these violent criminal elements do not evade justice," stated PPRO Ndukwe.

The authorities have urged the public to provide any credible information regarding individuals seeking treatment for suspicious gunshot wounds or any details that could lead to the arrest of the fleeing suspects.
