At least seven people were killed and three others abducted when a large group of heavily armed bandits launched a ferocious attack on Kyara village, a remote border community in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State, in the early hours of Thursday.
The assault began around 4:00 a.m. when the bandits reportedly numbering in the dozens and wielding sophisticated firearms stormed the village, which sits close to the Niger Republic border and suffers from complete lack of mobile phone network coverage.
The attackers fired indiscriminately into homes and at fleeing residents, sowing terror throughout the isolated community.In the deadly onslaught, seven villagers were shot dead on the spot.
Two others sustained serious gunshot wounds, while three residents were kidnapped. The bandits also rustled an unspecified number of domestic animals before withdrawing.
Security forces responded swiftly after the attack was reported. Joint operatives rushed to the scene, recovered the bodies of the deceased, and evacuated the injured to hospital for treatment and autopsy.
Troops have since mounted an aggressive manhunt for the perpetrators with the primary goals of rescuing the abducted victims, recovering the stolen livestock, and apprehending the fleeing gunmen.
To restore calm and deter further incursions, confidence-building patrols are currently ongoing in and around Kyara village and surrounding communities.
The latest violence highlights the persistent threat faced by remote border settlements in Sokoto State, where difficult terrain, poor communication infrastructure, and proximity to international borders continue to complicate security efforts and enable bandit operations.
Local residents have repeatedly called for stronger, sustained military presence and improved communication facilities in the area.
