FG Launches National Task Force on Patient Safety, Clinical Governance

The Federal Government has moved to fundamentally restructure Nigeria’s healthcare system with the establishment of the National Task Force on Clinical Governance and Patient Safety.

The initiative, announced Friday by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, represents a strategic shift toward improving service delivery and health outcomes nationwide.

According to the Minister, the task force is a key pillar of President Bola Tinubu’s "Renewed Hope Agenda" for the health sector.

The primary objective of the task force is to develop and operationalize sustainable standards and accountability mechanisms across Nigeria's health system.

Prof. Pate emphasized that the move is designed to integrate quality and patient safety into every level of health service delivery, ensuring that healthcare is not just accessible, but safe and people-centered.

This reform aligns Nigeria with global standards set by the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Bank, and the Lancet Global Health Commission, all of which advocate for low- and middle-income nations to prioritize high-quality care.

The Minister further noted that the initiative supports the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative and contributes to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 3.8.

A significant aspect of the new task force's mandate is the promotion of a "learning culture." Prof. Pate explained that the body will encourage behavioral incentives and capacity building rather than punitive actions, provided there is no evidence of proven negligence.

The task force is charged with several critical responsibilities, including:

Conducting a national landscape analysis of current clinical governance.

Standardizing national frameworks and reporting systems for adverse medical events.

Strengthening coordination between federal, state, and private sector healthcare stakeholders.

Enhancing community engagement through new patient feedback and complaint mechanisms.

Prof. Muhammad Pate will chair the task force, supported by the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Salako, who serves as the alternate chair.

The body comprises a wide array of stakeholders, including the Permanent Secretary of the Health Ministry, heads of regulatory councils for medicine, pharmacy, and nursing, as well as representatives from civil society organizations and international clinical governance experts.

By bringing together these diverse groups, the Federal Government aims to ensure that medical ethics and evidence-based standards are upheld consistently across the country.
