Police Warn Against Street Protests, Unlawful Gatherings in Anambra

Anambra State Police Command has issued a strong caution to residents and groups, urging them to refrain from organizing or taking part in any street marches, protests, or unauthorized gatherings in Awka, the state capital.

In a press statement released on Friday, January 16, 2026, the command's Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, explained that the directive is aimed at protecting public safety, maintaining peace, and preserving public order.

The police highlighted recent successes in the fight against cultism and violent crimes, including intelligence-led operations, strategic patrols, and community policing efforts.

They pointed to a recent gun battle just two days prior, where operatives neutralized a confessed member of the Vikings Confraternity who was allegedly planning retaliation for a rival cult killing in Enugwu Agidi.

According to the statement, unauthorized protests or street occupations could reverse these security gains by disrupting peace, obstructing lawful activities, and causing inconvenience to residents.

While acknowledging citizens' constitutional rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, the command stressed that these rights must be exercised responsibly and within the law.

Instead of taking to the streets, individuals and groups are encouraged to use lawful alternatives such as dialogue with authorities, submitting petitions, or working with relevant stakeholders.

SP Ikenga urged the public to stay calm, go about their normal activities, and report any suspicious movements that could threaten peace to the nearest police station.

The police reaffirmed their commitment to proactive measures to ensure a safe and secure environment for all residents of Anambra State.
