Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has explained the reason behind the deadly attack on Kasuwan Daji Market in Borgu Local Government Area, where several people were killed, and others abducted last week.
The governor spoke after a courtesy visit to the Emir of
Borgu, Alhaji Mohammed Dantoro.
He said the market was widely known for the sale of stolen
cattle, which made it a target for rival bandit groups.
Bago described the incident as tragic, saying, “It is
unfortunate this is happening again in less than two months, now that people
were murdered and slaughtered in market square.”
He claimed the attack was carried out by bandits who were
fighting over control of the illegal cattle trade.
According to him, “This market is called Kasuwan Daji.
Kasuwan Daji is a market of thieves. By definition, stolen cattle are sold in
the forest, so this is what happened. It is an attack by a bandit group in a
market where rustled cattle are sold.”
The governor stressed that the main concern was the loss of
lives.
He said the government had now understood the root of the
problem and was warning traditional authorities to be more careful.
According to Bago,
“The most important thing is that people were killed. Now we know the
crux of the matter, we are here to caution the Emirate council on their role to
give accommodation to those whom they don’t know to settle, and in turn they
come with dangerous weapons, ideology, extremism, and Boko Haram to commit
heinous crimes.”
On security measures, the governor said communities around
the Kainji Lake forest have been asked to relocate within the next two months.
This, he said, would allow security agencies to clear the
area of criminals.
He warned that there could be serious consequences if
residents refuse to cooperate, adding that relocation plans by the government
and the Emirate must be followed.
Bago also said the attack should serve as a warning to
traditional rulers, urging them not to allow strangers to settle in their areas
without proper background checks.
