Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima has called on African nations to embrace homegrown, innovative strategies to address the continent's economic difficulties and foster sustainable growth, development, and prosperity.
Speaking at the high-level Accra Reset Initiative session held on the sidelines of the 2026 World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Vice President Shettima described Africa as the emerging heartbeat of global demographic and economic transformation.
He stressed the importance of solutions driven by African creativity and leadership rather than external reliance. The Accra Reset, spearheaded by Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama, was praised by Vice President Shettima as a courageous, African-led effort to redefine the continent's future through sovereignty, self-determination, and genuine intra-African collaboration.
The initiative aims to help African governments overcome the "Triple Dependency Burden" — geopolitical vulnerability, donor dependence, and geostrategic marginalization, by rethinking economic strategies and tackling the pressing challenges facing citizens across the continent.
The Davos gathering brought together leaders from the Global South, with Nigeria represented by Vice President Shettima, to generate momentum for sovereign-led reforms and respectful international partnerships that prioritize African agency.
State House Correspondent Abdurrahman Jibrila reports that the forum is designed to mobilize support for African governments to redesign their approaches to economic transformation in a rapidly changing global landscape.
