'We Are In Society Where There Are No Consequences For Bad Behavior' – Saraki

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki delivered an assessment of Nigerian society during a recent public address at the 2026 Daily Trust Dialogue, his analysis centered on a critical lack of accountability that he believes is eroding the nation's foundations.

In a video shared by Daily Trust on X, Saraki articulated his concerns, stating: "We are a society that there are no consequences for bad behavior and non-adherence to the rule of law. We're a society that we need to address the issue of morality and values of our society, and, of course, the issue of the fight against corruption under establishments or credible elections."

He continued, emphasizing the broader implications: "Because I believe that The Journey has to address some of these larger issues that will make this society a better society so that finally history will not judge us by how long did the Fourth Republic survive? No, but how well it served the Nigerian people and shaped democracy.

"Saraki concluded on an optimistic note, referencing the event itself: "The judgment is still being written, and I hope when the history is written a bright morning in January 2026 in Abuja will feature as one of those days we put together a plan for the future."

Supporters lauded Saraki's candor, viewing it as a call to action for restoring ethical standards. Critics, however, questioned the timing and context, pointing to ongoing discussions about political accountability in the country.
