Scores Dead as Police Dislodge, Terrorists From Kogi Forest

Ongoing joint operations by troops of the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police Force have achieved significant successes in combating banditry across forested areas of Kogi State, resulting in the neutralisation of scores of bandits and the dismantling of their operational networks.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Kogi State Command, CSP William Ovye Aya, disclosed this in a statement released on Saturday in Lokoja.

He described the sustained operations as being carried out with "vigour, commitment and utmost professionalism," with crucial support from the Nigeria Police Force Airwing, which conducted precision air strikes to support ground forces.

According to the statement, the coordinated efforts have successfully flushed bandits out of their hideouts, forcing many to flee while others were neutralised, effectively dislodging their established networks.

“The ongoing onslaught against bandit operations in Kogi State by the joint police and military has yielded fruitful results. Bandits were flushed out, their networks dislodged, and scores were neutralised,” Aya stated.

This development comes amid intensified security measures in the state, where bandit groups have been pushed from neighboring areas like Kwara and Niger, leading to spillover threats.

Recent Army-led actions, including ambushes and patrols in early January that neutralised several bandits and led to arrests of logistics suppliers, have complemented these joint efforts.

The PPRO urged residents to remain vigilant and immediately report anyone observed with gunshot wounds, unexplained injuries, or suspicious behavior to the nearest police station.

He also called on the public to provide credible intelligence on criminal activities in their communities, emphasizing that "security remains a collective responsibility."

“Together, we can make Nigeria better,” Aya concluded. These operations reflect the Kogi State government's and security agencies' commitment to eradicating banditry and restoring peace, with authorities assuring continued aggressive action against criminal elements.

No specific casualty figures for the bandits were detailed in the latest statement, but the focus remains on sustained pressure to prevent regrouping in forested hideouts.
