Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has strongly defended the ongoing demolition exercise in the Makoko waterfront community, insisting it is essential to prevent potential tragedies and protect lives and property.
Speaking on the matter, the governor emphasized that the action targets only structures encroaching on high-tension power lines and areas near the Third Mainland Bridge, rather than the entire community.
“The safety of lives and property is paramount and must be safeguarded,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
He likened the situation to a recent incident involving a fuel tanker spill, warning that unchecked encroachments could lead to catastrophic events.
“Of what interest would it be for the government to demolish anyone’s structure if not for the overall safety of citizens?”
The governor clarified that demolitions began after prolonged engagements and are not aimed at displacing the whole of Makoko. He revealed that the state had been addressing the issue for over two and a half years through meetings with stakeholders.
Sanwo-Olu also criticized some local and international NGOs, accusing them of profiting from the situation by seeking large grants from donors while failing to deliver on promises. “We are aware that some, NGOs want to profit from this. We are studying it and will present evidence. They are shouting and crying more than the bereaved.”
In a show of compassion, the governor announced immediate support measures for affected residents. “By the way, I’ve instructed both the local government and the relevant ministries to see how they can provide additional support, palliatives, relocation options, and grants for some of these people, just to show compassion.”
The demolitions, which started in late December 2025, have displaced thousands in Makoko, a historic waterfront settlement known for its stilt houses and fishing-based economy.
The exercise aims to enforce safety setbacks from high-tension lines, following earlier approvals for a reduced 100-metre buffer (down from federal guidelines of 250 metres) to minimize widespread displacement.
The announcement comes amid ongoing protests and concerns from residents and civil society groups, who have alleged extensions beyond agreed limits, lack of adequate notice, and humanitarian impacts including homelessness during the holiday season.
