Tinubu Confers GCON to Business Ally Gilbert Chagoury

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has conferred the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), Nigeria's second-highest national honour, on Lebanese-Nigerian billionaire entrepreneur Sir Gilbert Chagoury.

The award, issued under Section 1(4) of the National Honours Act, recognises Chagoury's "outstanding virtues and services to our country, Nigeria," according to the official Instrument of Conferment signed by the President in Abuja.

Billionaire businessman Femi Otedola publicly congratulated Chagoury, describing him as a role model and praising his decades-long contributions to Nigeria's economy through landmark infrastructure projects, job creation, and business investments.

Chagoury, who co-founded the Chagoury Group with his brother Ronald in 1971, has been behind some of Nigeria's most significant private-sector developments, including the transformation of Banana Island into an elite residential area and the ambitious Eko Atlantic City project a massive reclaimed-land urban development in Lagos.

The honour places Chagoury in the company of other distinguished GCON recipients such as Aliko Dangote, Mike Adenuga, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Emeka Anyaoku, and Wole Soyinka.

The conferment has attracted attention due to Chagoury's long-standing personal and business relationship with President Tinubu, dating back to the latter's tenure as Lagos State Governor.

Chagoury's company, Hitech Construction, was awarded the multibillion-naira Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project in 2024, raising questions about transparency and potential conflicts of interest.
