Rivers Crisis: We Never Signed Any Agreement With Tinubu — Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has firmly denied signing any personal agreement with President Bola Tinubu regarding the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, amid escalating tensions with Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

In a recent statement captured during a public engagement and widely circulated on Sunday, Wike asserted that no such direct pact exists between him and the President.

He emphasized that his political camp alone holds the authority to determine the leadership future of Rivers State, declaring, “We never signed any agreement with Tinubu. We alone will determine who governs Rivers State.”

The declaration comes against the backdrop of renewed friction in the state, where Wike has repeatedly accused Governor Fubara of reneging on earlier peace deals brokered by President Tinubu.

Those interventions, including meetings in 2025 that involved key figures like National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and former Governor Peter Odili as witnesses, were intended to resolve the long-standing rift between the two leaders.

Wike has maintained that any prior understandings were collective commitments made in the President's presence, not bilateral agreements with Tinubu personally.

He has criticized what he describes as misleading advice given to Fubara by certain political actors, which he claims led to the breakdown of those arrangements.

The latest comments coincide with fresh impeachment proceedings initiated by the Rivers State House of Assembly against Governor Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.

The lawmakers, many of whom are perceived as aligned with Wike, have cited allegations including failure to present the 2026 budget and other acts deemed as gross misconduct.

The Assembly has also barred the governor from submitting the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) pending the outcome of the probe.

President Tinubu has once again intervened in the crisis, reportedly summoning Wike for discussions abroad while Fubara has traveled overseas, possibly to brief the President directly in France.

Sources close to the Presidency indicate concerns over potential escalation and efforts to prevent further instability in the oil-rich state.

Wike, who has been touring local government areas in Rivers to rally support for President Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda ahead of 2027, has stressed loyalty to the President while insisting that his group remains unshaken.

He described Rivers as a reliable stronghold for Tinubu, vowing that no one can displace their influence.

The political feud, which has seen multiple reconciliations, a six-month state of emergency in 2025, and shifting alliances, including Fubara's move to the All Progressives Congress (APC) continues to dominate discourse in the state.

No casualties or major disruptions have been reported, but stakeholders, including the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), have called for restraint and dialogue to prioritize governance and public welfare.

Authorities and party leaders are monitoring developments closely as efforts to de-escalate the situation remain ongoing.

The public has been urged to stay calm amid the heightened political activities.
