Triggers Panic in Nearby CommunitiesA serious fire outbreak devastated the foam production unit of the Ogun–Guangdong Free Trade Zone (OGFTZ) in Igbesa, Ogun State, on Sunday morning, January 11, 2026, destroying property estimated to be worth millions of naira.
The blaze, which started around 8:00 a.m., was reportedly caused by a gas explosion within the foam-manufacturing facility.
Thick smoke and intense flames quickly spread across the section before emergency responders arrived.
The Ogun State Fire Service responded promptly and successfully brought the fire under control, preventing it from spreading to adjacent areas.
No casualties have been reported.Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed that police operatives were immediately deployed to the scene after receiving a distress call.
The Divisional Police Officer of Igbesa Division is leading security operations at the site while firefighters complete their work.
In a statement, Babaseyi appealed to the public to remain calm and steer clear of the area to allow emergency services to operate effectively.
The incident caused widespread fear and panic among residents and students in the nearby Obanla community.
Many students from the Ogun State Institute of Technology (OGITECH), Igbesa, whose hostels are located close to the industrial zone hurriedly evacuated their accommodations carrying personal belongings as a precaution.
An OGITECH student, Kuwhede Vincent, who witnessed the incident, described seeing thick smoke followed by visible flames erupting from the facility.
He noted that while the company is very near his hostel, no student accommodation appeared to have been directly affected.
The OGITECH Students’ Union Government later issued an official statement urging students to stay calm but vigilant.
The union advised those living in the Obanla axis and surrounding areas to avoid the fire scene, remain indoors where safe, keep doors and windows closed in the presence of smoke, and switch off electrical appliances and gas sources as a preventive measure.
The precise cause of the explosion and fire remains under investigation. When contacted, the Ogun State Commissioner of Environment, Ola Oresanya, acknowledged the report and stated he would address the matter immediately.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation, and the public is advised to avoid the vicinity while assessments and cleanup efforts are ongoing.
