Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has assured residents that peace will soon return to the state, attributing his calm demeanor amid ongoing political challenges to his strong faith in God.
Speaking on Sunday during an interdenominational church service to commemorate the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day at St. Cyprian’s Anglican Church in Port Harcourt, the governor emphasized that he refrains from shouting or complaining about the state's issues because he knows "God is with him."
In a brief address, Fubara jokingly remarked to the congregation that the service might be his and Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu's last public function, before handing the microphone to his deputy. He recalled a statement from a New Year dinner, saying: “Dogs bark when they don’t understand.”
He continued: “A lot of you don’t understand that the reason why I don’t shout or complain is that I know that I have what is supreme, that is God.”Fubara urged calm among the people, stating: “I want everyone to be relaxed. What is important is peace for this dear state. We will get it by the special name of God.”
The appearance marked the first public outing for Fubara and his deputy since the Rivers State House of Assembly initiated fresh impeachment proceedings against them on Thursday.
The lawmakers, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, accused the governor and deputy of gross misconduct, including allegedly refusing to present the state budget in line with constitutional provisions and constituting a threat to democracy.
This represents the third impeachment attempt against Fubara in less than three years, amid a prolonged political rift with former Governor Nyesom Wike and lawmakers aligned with him.
The Armed Forces Remembrance Day service honored Nigerian servicemen and women who sacrificed their lives for the nation's unity and sovereignty, featuring prayers for fallen heroes and the safety of those in active service.
Fubara's composed remarks come as he recently returned from an overseas trip reportedly involving consultations related to the crisis and chose a spiritual setting to call for peace and restraint in the face of heightened tensions.
The governor and his administration have so far remained largely silent on the specific impeachment allegations.
