The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has designated the last Saturday of every January as Igbo Adoration and Thanksgiving Day, a unified day of spiritual gratitude and reflection for Ndigbo worldwide.
The decision was taken at the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on January 20, 2026. It came in response to an appeal by the Igbo College of Bishops, represented by Archbishop David Onuoha (Owerri Anglican Province) and Archbishop Sosthenes Eze (Enugu Anglican Province), among other clerics.
The bishops requested a change from the earlier Imeobi resolution of December 23, 2025, which had proposed the last Sunday of January, citing stronger spiritual and practical symbolism for observing the day on Saturday.
In a statement signed by National Publicity Secretary Dr. Ezechi Chukwu, Ohanaeze confirmed: “Consequently, the NEC resolved that the celebration be held on the last Saturday of every January instead. Imeobi says it would be communicated in its next meeting.
”President-General Senator Azuta Mbata urged Igbo people at home and in the Diaspora to embrace the day’s deep significance as “a moment of collective gratitude to God for His enduring mercies and grace upon the Igbo nation, despite the numerous challenges encountered over the decades.”
"All churches in Igboland are requested to observe the inaugural edition on Saturday, January 31, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon with dedicated prayers, adoration, and thanksgiving services.“
Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide calls on all Igbo people to participate wholeheartedly in making this day a unifying spiritual landmark for the Igbo nation,” the statement concluded.
The initiative reinforces Ohanaeze’s commitment to spiritual renewal and collective remembrance within the Igbo community.
