The Ogun State Government has announced the immediate suspension of the ongoing selection process for the new Awujale of Ijebuland, one of Yorubaland's most prestigious traditional stools.
The decision, detailed in a letter dated January 20, 2026, from the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ganiyu Hamzat, cites a surge in petitions, including one from renowned Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (popularly known as KWAM 1) along with security reports and concerns from stakeholders.
The move aims to preserve public order, safeguard the integrity of the process, and uphold the dignity of the royal institution.
The Awujale stool has been vacant since July 2025, following the passing of the late Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona at age 91.
The Fusengbuwa Ruling House is entitled to present candidates under the rotation system.A nomination exercise took place on January 12, 2026, producing nearly 100 aspirants.
However, KWAM 1, who claims eligibility as a member of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, petitioned the state executive council alleging unlawful exclusion from the meeting.
In filings through his lawyer, Wahab Shittu (SAN), he argued that the process violated the Obas and Chiefs Law of Ogun State 2021, the Awujale Chieftaincy Declaration, and constitutional rights to fair hearing.
He accused organizers of barring eligible members, including himself, through restricted access and a delegate system enforced by security personnel, rendering the exercise flawed and exclusionary.
This marks at least the second halt in the process, as the government previously intervened over similar procedural and legal concerns.
The suspension directs all parties to pause activities pending further directives, with the state emphasizing the need to resolve disputes transparently to avoid prolonged crises or litigation that could undermine the revered stool's stability and cultural significance in Ijebuland and Ogun State.
