Nasarawa North Senator Godiya Akwashiki Dies at 52 in Indian Hospital


Senator Godiya Akwashiki, representing Nasarawa North Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate, has passed away at the age of 52 following a protracted illness.


A family source confirmed that the senator died on December 31, 2025, in a hospital in India, where he had been flown for advanced medical treatment after battling serious health issues for some time.


The source described his passing as "a profound loss to Nasarawa State, the Eggon nation, and Nigeria as a whole," highlighting Akwashiki's dedication to development projects and empowerment programs in his constituency. 


He was praised as one of the most impactful senators from Nasarawa North.Born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah village, Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area, Akwashiki began his education at Government Primary School, Angba Iggah (First School Leaving Certificate, 1987), followed by Government Technical College, Assakio (secondary education completed in 1993). 


He later earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Nasarawa State University, Keffi, in 2010.


His political journey started in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, where he served two terms (2011–2019) under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). 


He held the position of Majority Leader in his first term (2011–2015) and Deputy Speaker in his second (2015–2019).


In 2019, he won election to the Senate on the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform, and was re-elected in 2023 under the Social Democratic Party (SDP). 


In the National Assembly, he chaired the Senate Committee on Inter-Parliamentary Affairs, served as Vice-Chairman of the Committee on Media and Public Affairs, and was later appointed Chairman of the Senate Committee on Air Force in August 2023.Senator Akwashiki is survived by his wife and children.
