The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has assured residents and political stakeholders that Abuja will remain peaceful and well-organised as preparations begin toward the 2027 general elections.
Wike gave the assurance in Abuja on Thursday in a New Year message to residents, saying the FCT Administration is ready to manage the political activities that typically precede national elections in the country’s capital.
According to him, Abuja’s status as the seat of government would naturally attract intense political engagement, but the administration would ensure that campaigns and related events take place without disruption.
“Being the Centre of Government, the Federal Capital Territory would witness a beehive of activities.
“Be assured that the FCT Administration will continue to provide an environment conducive to the orderly hosting of all political events preceding and relating to the general elections,” he said.
The minister noted that the administration’s commitment is to guarantee a free, fair, and secure political atmosphere for all parties and actors as the election season approaches.
Reflecting on the outgoing year, Wike expressed gratitude to residents and visitors for their support, crediting their cooperation for the progress recorded across the territory.
He described the past year as one marked by achievements despite challenges, saying the administration made “great strides, massive developments and overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles, all thanks to your cooperation.”
While wishing residents a successful 2026, Wike said the new year presents an opportunity to build on and expand existing gains.
“It is my earnest hope that this year, our Administration will receive more support from residents that will galvanise our plans and projections for the FCT into tangible developments, projects, and facilities that will greatly enhance the quality of life for all residents regardless of their social status,” he stated.
He outlined ongoing and planned projects across multiple sectors, explaining that the administration has already “laid the groundwork for projects and programmes that will trigger positive developments in critical sectors of society, such as education, health, the judiciary, transportation, agriculture, and security.”
Residents, he added, should expect the commissioning of key infrastructure, including “rehabilitated schools, roads, bridges, health facilities, transportation hubs, facilities for the judiciary, security infrastructure, and programmes that will impact FCT residents positively.”
Wike also linked recent developments in the territory to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which he said has driven growth across both central Abuja and satellite communities. He noted that development has reached “from the Abuja Municipal to far-flung areas such as Abaji, Kuje and Kwali.”
Describing 2026 as a landmark year, the minister pointed to the forthcoming 50th anniversary of the creation of the FCT, calling it “a testament to the vision of our founding fathers, and to the resilience of Nigerians who have continuously demonstrated the resolve to coexist in peace and unity these past 50 years.”
