Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has declared that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has effectively granted the Igbo people (Ndigbo) the essence of the "Biafra" they have long sought, by fully integrating the South-East into national politics and development.
In his New Year message released on Wednesday, the former Ebonyi State governor hailed the Tinubu administration's robust economic policies, stating that the nation's most challenging period is over and predicting a massive turnaround across all sectors in 2026.
Umahi urged South-East residents to steadfastly support President Tinubu's re-election in 2027, describing him as a "consolation" for years of perceived neglect and marginalisation.
He expressed confidence that the region would "rewrite the wrongs" of the 2023 elections by delivering massive votes for Tinubu, who he said has ended the "criminal marginalisation" by previous administrations.
Highlighting potential political ambitions within the region, Umahi noted: "One of our brothers is already saying that in 2027 he will be on the ballot, but I’m here telling Ndigbo that President Tinubu will be on the ballot, and once he’s on the ballot, all the Governors of the South East are on the ballot, and myself, the Minister of Works, is also on the ballot because it is our collective interest to support Mr. President... Indeed, the Biafra is here."
He called on Ndigbo to embrace "social reengineering and deradicalisation" to recognise that the aspirations tied to Biafra equity and participation in national development have been realised through Tinubu's policies of integration.
On infrastructure, Umahi assured that federal road projects across the country, including in the South-East, are adequately funded and supervised for timely completion to specifications.
He announced plans for a special task force, in collaboration with security agencies, to enforce a ban on trucks parking on federal highways, enhancing safety for post-Yuletide travellers.
