Vice President Kashim Shettima has hailed Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang's move to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a positive step that will strengthen progress, foster unity, and enhance collaboration between the state and federal government.
Speaking at a grand reception ceremony held at the Jos Polo Field, where Governor Mutfwang and his supporters were formally welcomed into the APC, Vice President Shettima praised the governor's leadership and dedication to addressing the state's challenges.
“I know His Excellency Caleb Mutfwang well enough to tell you how restless he has been in finding lasting solutions to the problems on the Plateau,” Shettima stated.
He highlighted Mutfwang's efforts in promoting peace across communities, advancing renewable energy projects, boosting agriculture, revitalizing transport networks, and prioritizing budgets for education, healthcare, youth empowerment, and overall welfare.
Shettima described Mutfwang's administration as one anchored in genuine service, noting visible transformations in the state.
“We have seen the transformation Plateau has undergone under your leadership, and we are proud to have you on board the APC train,” he said, adding that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had personally assured the governor of his prominent place within the party.
The Vice President emphasized the APC's inclusive character, calling it “a destination for all who believe in a united future.”
He urged Plateau residents to embrace unity, reminding them that “what binds us together supersedes whatever that divides us.”
In a practical show of federal support, Shettima announced that construction on the Akwanga-Jos Road project would begin soon, with contractors mobilizing to site within the next three weeks after final preparations.
Other prominent APC leaders echoed the positive sentiments. Senate President Godswill Akpabio expressed confidence that the development would bring peace, accelerated progress, and help defeat poverty in Plateau State.
Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas described the move as welcome and called for unity among party members.
APC National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda Goshwe, who had been Mutfwang's opponent in the 2023 governorship election, said he was fulfilled by the reunion and anticipated rapid development and strong electoral backing for President Tinubu in 2027.
Imo State Governor and Chairman of the APC Governors’ Forum, Sen. Hope Uzodinma, welcomed Mutfwang, noting that he would add significant value to the forum, the party, and the people of Plateau and Nigeria.
Governor Mutfwang, after receiving the APC flag, thanked President Tinubu, Vice President Shettima, National Chairman Yilwatda, Senator Simon Lalong (former APC leader in the state), and other stakeholders for the warm acceptance.
He clarified that his defection prompted by leadership crises in the PDP was not aimed at dominating the APC structure but at contributing value, ending political rivalries, and collaborating for the party's success and Tinubu's re-election in 2027.
Mutfwang paid special tribute to Senator Lalong for graciously stepping aside as party leader in the state, calling it an act of wisdom, courage, and humility.
