Museveni Declared Winner, Extends 40-Year Rule in Uganda

Uganda's Electoral Commission has officially declared President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni the winner of the January 15, 2026, presidential election, securing his seventh consecutive term and extending his rule that began in 1986 to nearly 40 years.

According to the final results announced today, Museveni received 7.9 million votes (71.65%), while his main challenger, opposition leader Bobi Wine (Robert Kyagulanyi), obtained 2.7 million votes (24.72%).

Other candidates received less than 2% each. The election was heavily criticized both domestically and internationally.

A nationwide internet shutdown was imposed several days before and during voting, which authorities described as necessary to curb misinformation and prevent violence.

The blackout severely limited real-time monitoring and independent reporting.Bobi Wine has rejected the results, describing them as "fake" and the product of "massive fraud," including ballot stuffing, voter intimidation, and the abduction of opposition party agents.

He has called for peaceful protests while reportedly going into hiding after a reported security raid on his residence.

African Union election observers acknowledged that voting day itself was largely peaceful but pointed to significant irregularities, including widespread intimidation, arrests of opposition figures, and the negative impact of the internet blackout on transparency.

Museveni, now 81, has maintained that his continued leadership guarantees stability for Uganda. Critics, however, argue that the election reflects long-standing patterns of authoritarian control, including previous constitutional amendments that removed presidential term and age limits.

Heavy security deployment continues in Kampala and other major areas as the country awaits possible legal challenges or further developments following the announcement.

Uganda remains under the leadership of its longest-serving president.
