Former Senate Minority Leader and ex-Senator representing Plateau North, Senator Simon Mwadkwon, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The high-profile defection was announced by the senator himself on Thursday during a courtesy visit to APC elders and stakeholders in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
“I am here to formally announce my entry into the APC and to seek the counsel of party elders at the grassroots,” Mwadkwon declared during the meeting, which was attended by top party figures in the state.
The move marks a significant political realignment in Plateau State, where the PDP has historically maintained strong influence, particularly in the northern senatorial zone.
Mwadkwon, who served as Senate Minority Leader during the 9th National Assembly (2019–2023), is one of the most prominent political figures to cross over from the PDP to the APC in recent times.
Sources close to the former senator say the decision follows months of consultations and reflects his desire to align with the current federal administration led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as well as to contribute more effectively to development efforts in Plateau State.
The defection comes ahead of preparations for future elections and is expected to further shift the political dynamics in the North Central region.APC leaders in Plateau State welcomed Senator Mwadkwon warmly, describing his entry as a major boost to the party’s strength and unity in the state.
Further details of his next political steps, including any possible role in the APC structure or future electoral ambitions, are yet to be disclosed.
The development continues a trend of high-level defections that have characterized Nigerian politics in recent years.
