Malami’s Son Rearrested Shortly After Bail Release at Kuje Prison

Security agents have rearrested Abdulaziz Malami, son of former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami, at the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja, moments after his bail release procedures were completed.

The incident occurred on Friday when court bailiffs from the Federal High Court arrived at the facility with fully processed bail documents to secure Abdulaziz's release. Sources indicate that he was handed over to the bailiffs but was immediately taken back into custody by security operatives who had been monitoring movements in and out of the prison based on intelligence reports.

A source familiar with the matter stated, “He was released to the court bailiffs with fully processed bail papers but was immediately rearrested by security agents.”

Abdulaziz, along with his father Abubakar Malami and his mother Asabe Malami (also referred to as Hajia Bashir Asabe), is currently standing trial before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja on 16-count charges of money laundering involving approximately N8.7 billion.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) alleges the family used fronts and corporate entities to conceal the origin of funds and acquire high-value properties.

Earlier this month, the court granted bail to Malami, his wife, and son in the sum of N500 million each, with two sureties in like sum, and scheduled the trial to commence on February 17.

However, the bail conditions are yet to be perfected, and the defendants remain in custody pending fulfillment. In a related development, the EFCC recently secured an interim forfeiture order for 57 properties valued at N213.23 billion linked to the Malami family, located across Abuja, Kebbi, Kano, and Kaduna states.

Some of these assets, including hotels, schools, factories, and commercial buildings, were reportedly connected to Abdulaziz, his brother Abiru-Rahman Malami, and their mother.

The exact reason for the rearrest has not been officially disclosed, though some reports suggest it may relate to concerns over the release process or ongoing security monitoring.
