Lagos Govt Orders Probe into Death of Chimamanda Adichie’s Son

The Lagos State Government has directed a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Nkanu Nnamdi, the 21-month-old son of renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, following serious allegations of medical negligence at a private hospital in the state.

The toddler, one of Adichie's twin sons, reportedly passed away on January 6, 2026 (with some reports citing January 7), after a brief illness that escalated during treatment.

Adichie has publicly alleged that fatal errors, including excessive sedation with propofol, lack of proper monitoring, and other procedural failures at Euracare Multispecialist Hospital in Lagos, directly contributed to her son's death.

She described the incident as preventable and has accused the facility of negligence. In a statement issued on Saturday by the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Health, Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, the government expressed deep condolences to Adichie, her husband Dr. Ivara Esege, and their family, calling the loss of a child a "profound tragedy" and "devastating."

Governor Sanwo-Olu has instructed the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) to conduct an independent, transparent, and comprehensive probe into the matter.

The investigation, which has already commenced with visits to the facility, will examine:

Compliance with clinical protocols and patient safety standards

Professional conduct of all involved parties

Medical records, allegations, and reports

Collaboration with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and other regulators

The state emphasized its zero-tolerance policy for medical negligence or unprofessional conduct in any health facility.

Any individuals or institutions found culpable will face appropriate sanctions under the law.

The government urged the public to avoid speculation while the probe continues and assured that findings will be made public upon conclusion to ensure accountability and prevent future incidents.

The hospital has reportedly initiated its own internal review, expressed sympathies to the family, and stated that some public accounts contain inaccuracies, while maintaining that care followed standards.

The case has drawn widespread attention, highlighting concerns about healthcare standards in private facilities amid grief over the young child's passing.

Prominent figures, including President Bola Tinubu, had earlier offered condolences following the initial announcement of Nkanu's death.

The investigation remains ongoing.
