Fubara, Deputy Make Flirst Public Appearance Amid Fresh Impeachment Threat

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, made their first joint public appearance on Sunday by attending a special interdenominational church service to commemorate the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day at St. Cyprian’s Anglican Church in Port Harcourt.

The service, part of a week-long program honoring Nigerian servicemen and women who lost their lives defending the nation's unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, included prayers for the repose of fallen heroes' souls and for the safety and protection of those currently serving in the armed forces.

Governor Fubara and Deputy Governor Odu were accompanied by other senior government officials and exchanged pleasantries during the event, including with former Governor Peter Odili.

The attendance came just days after the Rivers State House of Assembly initiated fresh impeachment proceedings against both the governor and his deputy on Thursday, marking the third such attempt in less than three years.

The latest move by the assembly follows allegations of gross misconduct leveled against the Fubara administration, though the governor and his team have remained silent on the claims amid the ongoing political tensions in the state.

The church service forms one of several activities lined up for the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day in Rivers State.

These include:Juma’at prayers on Friday, January 9, at the Rivers State Central Mosque.

A Humanitarian Outreach/Family and Community Day on Saturday, January 10, hosted by the wife of the governor, Lady Valerie Fubara, for veterans, widows, and families.

The grand finale wreath-laying and parade ceremony scheduled for Thursday, January 15, at the Isaac Boro Park Cenotaph in Port Harcourt.

The event underscores the state's commitment to honoring fallen heroes and supporting veterans, even as Rivers continues to grapple with internal political challenges stemming from the long-standing rift between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike.

No official statements were issued by the governor or deputy regarding the impeachment process during the service.

The public appearance has drawn attention amid heightened speculation about the political future in the oil-rich state.
