The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to arrest and prosecute Julius Abure, former National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), for allegedly impersonating the party's leader and ignoring court rulings.
In a statement signed Wednesday by National Coordinator Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA cited recent judgments from the Federal High Court and Supreme Court that removed Abure's executive and affirmed Senator Nenadi Usman as head of the authentic caretaker committee.
Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja ruled Wednesday in suit FHC/ABJ/CS/2262/2025, filed by Senator Usman, that the Usman-led committee is the only valid authority representing the LP until a national convention.
The court directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize it accordingly. This reaffirmed the Supreme Court's April 4, 2025, decision invalidating Abure's executive.
The High Court dismissed Abure's claim that the dispute was a non-justiciable internal party matter, stating a caretaker committee was necessary post-apex court verdict.
HURIWA commended the judiciary for upholding the rule of law and criticized Abure for continuing to act as national chairman despite these rulings, calling it contempt of court and an affront to judicial authority.
The group warned that failing to enforce the judgments risks eroding public trust in democracy, weakening opposition parties, and pushing Nigeria toward one-party dominance.
HURIWA urged the Nigeria Police to enforce the court orders, including removing Abure from the LP secretariat if needed, as required under the 1999 Constitution and Police Act 2020.
It also appealed to INEC to request police support to end the crisis and restore stability in the Labour Party.
Abure's faction has indicated plans to appeal the Federal High Court decision.
