Governor Nwifuru Orders Thorough Probe into Deadly Attack on Ebonyi Community

Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru has directed security agencies to launch a comprehensive investigation into the recent violent attack on Okporojo Community in Oso Edda, Edda Local Government Area, which resulted in multiple deaths, injuries, abductions, and widespread destruction of property.

The assault, which occurred on Thursday night, January 29, 2026, stemmed from a long-standing boundary dispute between Oso Edda and the neighboring Amasiri community in Afikpo Local Government Area.

Reports indicate that armed assailants invaded the area, beheading at least four victims, shooting others, abducting several residents, and setting numerous houses ablaze.

In a strongly worded statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Monday Uzor, the governor described the incident as "barbaric" and a "flagrant disregard to the sanctity of human life."

"I received with rude shock the news of the recent attack on Oso Edda which claimed lives and led to destruction of property. This act of callousness is a direct affront to our commitment to restoring peace in our communities and we cannot tolerate it," Governor Nwifuru stated.

He emphasized that the security of lives and property remains the government's top priority, vowing that "no effort will be spared to get to the root of the matter" and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The state is working closely with law enforcement to apprehend those responsible.

The governor also instructed security forces to deploy swiftly to the area to prevent any further violence, reprisals, or recurrence of the attacks.

He appealed to the affected community and others in the state to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and to embrace peace, warning that no development can thrive amid violence and destruction.

"My prayers and thoughts are with the families who lost their loved ones and property in this unfortunate incident. Rest assured that they will not be left alone," he added.

The attack has heightened tensions in the region due to the protracted land disagreement, with previous clashes also causing loss of life and property.

Authorities have reinforced security in the affected areas to maintain calm.
