Governor Kefas Declares Karim-Lamido LGA Special Area of Security Concern

Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, has designated Karim-Lamido Local Government Area as a "Special Area of Security Concern" via Executive Order No. 1 of 2026, aimed at curbing persistent violence and restoring lasting peace.

The declaration, announced in Jalingo, responds to ongoing communal clashes, banditry, and farmer-herder conflicts that have plagued the area, resulting in attacks on civilians and security personnel, destruction of property and farmlands, resident displacements, and fatalities, including soldiers killed during operations in 2025.

Government assessments highlight the threats these instabilities pose to local communities and the broader development of Taraba State.Under the new status, enhanced measures will include deploying additional security forces to hotspots and formally registering and coordinating vigilante groups, hunters, and local defense units under the Taraba State Marshals Security Guard.

Governor Kefas has also ramped up consultations with stakeholders to tackle root causes such as unemployment, land disputes, and intercommunal tensions.

A Judicial Commission of Inquiry has been established to probe the crises, including allegations of instigation and loss of lives, with recommendations expected on accountability, reconciliation, and sustainable peace.

Additionally, committees focused on land use and conflict prevention will work to mitigate resource-based disputes.

Reaffirming his administration's commitment to inclusive governance, Governor Kefas warned that violence will not be tolerated and called on residents to cooperate with security agencies, adhere to lawful directives, and support community-led peace efforts.

The move is anticipated to attract more resources to Karim-Lamido, blending robust enforcement with judicial and social initiatives to facilitate the safe return of displaced persons and foster economic recovery.
