FG Launches Implementation of National Intellectual Property Policy

The Federal Government has officially commenced the implementation phase of the National Intellectual Property Policy and Strategy (NIPPS), following its approval and launch in December 2025.

Over the weekend, key committees were inaugurated in Abuja to drive the execution of the policy.

The move marks a critical transition from planning to active delivery, with the aim of strengthening Nigeria’s framework for protecting and commercialising creativity, innovation, and indigenous knowledge.

The Inter-Ministerial Steering Committee will provide high-level policy coordination, strategic oversight, and alignment with national economic goals, including Nigeria’s obligations under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Intellectual Property Protocol.

Leading the charge, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, described the NIPPS implementation as a major national economic reform priority.

She stressed the importance of speed and effective execution to deliver real benefits to Nigerian creators, innovators, and businesses.

The Technical Working Group (TWG) and the Inter-Agency Coordination Group (ICG) were also formally constituted.

The TWG, which includes Dr. John Asein (Director-General of the Nigerian Copyright Commission) alongside representatives from relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies, will serve as the main operational engine.

Its responsibilities include translating policy goals into detailed workstreams, timelines, budgets, and measurable outcomes.Speaking on behalf of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Justice highlighted three immediate priority areas for early progress:

Review and modernisation of Nigeria’s intellectual property laws

Ratification of key international IP treaties

Establishment of a unified Nigerian Intellectual Property Commission, as previously approved by the Federal Executive Council

Dr. John Asein, responding on behalf of the TWG, reaffirmed the group’s full commitment to delivering results in the national interest and to the satisfaction of the global intellectual property community.

The implementation of NIPPS is expected to play a vital role in transforming Nigeria’s creative industries, technology sector, and traditional knowledge systems into protected, commercially valuable assets capable of driving economic diversification, job creation, and sustainable growth.
