Armed bandits attacked an agricultural farm in Ogunmakin Village, Ibadan, Oyo State on January 16, abducting a 42-year-old Indian company director and killing a police officer who attempted to stop the kidnapping.
The incident occurred around 1:00 p.m. at Aqua Triton Company farm, where approximately ten heavily armed bandits stormed the premises while Renjith Pillai, the director, was inspecting crops.
Four officers from the Police Mobile Force (PMF) were providing security at the location. Inspector Imoobe Prester engaged the attackers in a gunfight to prevent the abduction.
During the exchange of fire, the bandits shot the inspector, seized his AK-47 rifle, and fled into the bush with the abducted expatriate.
The wounded officer was rushed for medical treatment but later succumbed to his injuries.
A combined security team, including officers from Idi-Ayure Division, additional PMF personnel, the state anti-kidnapping squad, tactical units, local hunters, and vigilantes was immediately deployed to comb the surrounding bushes in search of the kidnappers and the stolen firearm.
Intelligence gathered from villagers and farm workers is currently guiding the operation. The body of the slain Inspector Imoobe Prester has been deposited at Adeoyo Hospital morgue on Ring Road, Ibadan, for preservation and autopsy.
The Oyo State Police Command says investigation is ongoing and has appealed to the public to provide any useful information that could help secure the safe release of the abducted Indian expatriate and lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.
The incident once again highlights the growing security challenges faced by farms and rural communities in parts of Oyo State due to banditry and kidnapping activities.
