The Federal Government has approved a ₦1 trillion Metropolitan Rail Service project for Kano State, marking a significant step toward modernizing urban transport, alleviating traffic congestion, and stimulating economic development in the metropolitan area.
Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf announced the approval while receiving the state's contingent that participated in the 2025 National Qur’anic Recitation Competition in Borno State.
In a statement issued by Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Director General of Media and Publicity at Government House, Kano, the governor described the project as a landmark initiative that will deliver a modern, efficient, and affordable mass transit system linking key districts across the metropolis.
The rail service is expected to enhance resident mobility, facilitate smoother trade and commerce, attract greater investment, and improve overall quality of life for Kano residents.
Governor Yusuf highlighted that his administration's recent political realignment with the Federal Government under the All Progressives Congress (APC) was a deliberate strategy to unlock vital development projects for the state.
He positioned the rail project as a transformative intervention that will establish Kano as a premier transportation hub in Northern Nigeria.
The governor pledged close collaboration between the state government and relevant federal agencies to ensure transparent implementation and optimal benefits for the people of Kano.
Yusuf expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for the approval and reaffirmed his administration's commitment to complementing federal initiatives through supportive policies and infrastructure efforts.
The announcement comes amid broader discussions on infrastructure development in Kano, following the governor's recent defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the APC.
