I am Still in Labour Party, but Nobody Knows Tomorrow - Alex Otto

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has reaffirmed that he remains a member of the Labour Party (LP), while adding a note of uncertainty about the future, stating, “nobody knows tomorrow.”

The governor made the declaration on Thursday, January 29, 2026, during the monthly edition of his media interaction session, “Dr. Alex Otti Speaks to Abians,” where he fielded questions from journalists.

Addressing speculation amid the Labour Party's internal challenges including the recent defection of 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and ongoing leadership disputes Otti emphasized his current stance.“We are on the right side.

We have maintained that Abure’s tenure has expired and we went to court, which affirmed that. So, the Court judgment confirmed actually that his tenure has expired and advised people to obey court decisions to save the courts from unnecessary troubles,” he said.

He continued: “We are not in election period. If election comes, we will still run under the Labour Party, but nobody knows tomorrow. But today, I am still in the Labour Party.”

The comment comes against the backdrop of rumors about potential defections from the LP, particularly following Peter Obi's exit.

Otti, who joined the Labour Party before Obi and has been affirmed by some party figures as a key leader for rebuilding efforts, has previously dismissed suggestions of defecting to parties like the APC or ADC, stressing his commitment to rescuing and repositioning the LP.

In the same session, Otti also responded to threats of legal action from former governors over his decision to operate from his country home in Nvosi, Isialangwa South LGA, rather than the state Government House.

He said there is no constitutional requirement to reside in the official residence and that his lawyers are prepared for any lawsuit.

The governor highlighted ongoing state achievements, including a surge in school enrollment to over 300,000 students, recruitment of about 4,000 teachers, and plans to introduce a digital rating system for hotels using GPS and verified criteria.

Otti's statement has sparked discussions among political observers, given the fluid nature of Nigerian politics ahead of future elections, though he maintains his focus on governance and party stability in Abia State.
