FG Signals Readiness to Regulate Social Media for National Unity, Sanity

The Federal Government of Nigeria has reaffirmed its readiness to introduce regulations on social media platforms if such measures are necessary to foster sanity, curb misinformation, and preserve national unity.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the declaration during his inaugural meeting with resident information officers from the ministry in Abuja.

He emphasized that the government would not hesitate to act where regulation serves the greater good of promoting responsible online communication and safeguarding the country's social fabric.

In the same engagement, the minister positioned his office as a central hub "a one-stop shop" for accurate and authentic information on government policies, programs, and activities.

He urged the information officers to strengthen networking, build strong relationships, and serve as reliable channels for disseminating factual government updates to the public.

The statement comes amid ongoing national discussions on the role of social media in spreading information, potential risks of disinformation, and the balance between free expression and measures to maintain peace and cohesion in Nigeria's diverse society.

Idris has previously highlighted the dangers of misinformation and disinformation, describing them as threats that require collective action, while also assuring that the government remains committed to upholding press freedom and responsible media practices.
