The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has achieved a significant breakthrough in its crackdown on violent crime, arresting three members of a notorious "one-chance" armed robbery syndicate linked to the brutal killing of Barrister Princess Chigbo Nwamaka Mediatrix, a respected Abuja-based lawyer and former treasurer of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) FCT branch.
The suspects, Saifullahi Yusuf (22), his brother Ishau Yusuf (24), and Minka’ilu Jibril (also known as Dan-Hajia), all from Kaduna State and residents of Dan-Tata Community in Dei-Dei, Abuja were apprehended between January 9 and 10, 2026, in intelligence-led operations across Dei-Dei, Dakwa, and Dan-Tata communities in the Kubwa area.
A fourth suspect, identified as Musa, remains at large, with police intensifying efforts to track him down.According to SP Josephine Adeh, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, the arrests followed directives from Commissioner of Police CP Miller Dantawaye to swiftly bring all perpetrators to justice.
Operatives from the Command’s Scorpion Squad, led by ACP Victor Ogbeide Godfrey, tracked the victim’s stolen Android phone using advanced digital intelligence, leading to the suspects' capture.
The tragic incident occurred on January 5, 2026, around 5:50 p.m., when Barrister Chigbo unknowingly boarded a black Volkswagen Golf 3 vehicle along the Kubwa Expressway, mistaking it for legitimate commercial transport.
Upon entering, the suspects rolled up the tinted windows, threatened her with weapons, and demanded ransom. When she refused to cooperate, she was allegedly assaulted and pushed out of the moving vehicle, resulting in her death.
Her lifeless body was later discovered by the roadside, with her bag and personal belongings recovered nearby.
The gang reportedly sold the victim's phone for N120,000 in Dei-Dei, with proceeds distributed among members: Jibril received N30,000, Saifullahi N15,000, and the rest shared between Ishau and the fleeing suspect.
Preliminary investigations confirm the suspects belong to a long-standing "one-chance" syndicate that has terrorized the FCT for years, particularly during festive seasons.
Items recovered from the suspects include five scissors, two sharp dagger knives, two other knives, a long chain for restraining victims, and a pair of pliers all believed to have been used in their criminal activities.
CP Dantawaye commended the operatives' professionalism and reassured residents of the FCT that the command remains committed to dismantling such networks and ensuring safety.
The police urged the public to exercise caution when boarding vehicles, report suspicious activities, and avoid hitchhiking.
The killing of Barrister Chigbo, which came on the same day another victim , a nurse fell prey to similar criminals, has sparked widespread outrage.
The Nigerian Bar Association has described the resurgence of "one-chance" crimes as a security emergency, calling on FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to prioritize decisive action.
This arrest marks a step forward in addressing the growing menace of "one-chance" syndicates in Abuja, as investigations continue to uncover possible links to other violent incidents in the territory.
