The Federal Government has officially inaugurated a ₦40 billion Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) control centre on the Third Mainland Bridge, marking a major milestone in enhancing security, traffic management, and overall safety on one of Nigeria's busiest and most iconic infrastructure landmarks.
The facility, constructed by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), was commissioned on Sunday by the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi.
The project, with a contract sum of ₦40.17 billion (of which ₦36 billion has been paid), includes advanced surveillance systems capable of monitoring both the bridge surface and underwater areas a first-of-its-kind deployment in the country.
Speaking at the event, Umahi highlighted the transformation of the bridge under the current administration.
"When we came on board in 2023, we met a very terrible Third Mainland Bridge, with issues on the pavement, surface, and infrastructure both above and below water," he said.
He credited President Bola Tinubu's directive for a comprehensive re-evaluation and rehabilitation, including resurfacing and replacement of expansion joints, which has delivered high-quality results that Lagosians now appreciate.
The CCTV centre is equipped with cutting-edge features such as 240 solar panels, full air-conditioning, 10 inverters, a 300 KVA transformer, a standby generating plant, multiple monitoring screens, a borehole facility, and approximately 1,268 solar street lights.
As part of the handover, the ministry will provide the police with a surveillance boat and two Hilux vans to support ongoing monitoring, with provisions for other security agencies to join if needed.
Umahi emphasized the system's multi-purpose role: preventing suicide attempts (as announced in 2025 when cameras were first installed), curbing illegal sand excavation beneath the bridge, enforcing speed limits, and improving general security.
He expressed concern over excessive speeding by motorists and urged strict adherence to traffic rules for safer journeys.Olufemi Dare, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, described the centre as unprecedented in Nigeria.
"I doubt if there is any bridge in the country that has what we have deployed here today, where you have CCTV to monitor both underwater and the bridge itself," he said, praising President Tinubu for approving the project and Umahi for ensuring due process.
This inauguration represents the first phase of commissioning, with a full event planned upon completion of the ongoing bridge extension.
