Compulsorily Retired Police Officers Appeal to Tinubu for Reinstatement

A group of compulsorily retired Nigerian police officers from Courses 33, 34, and 35 of the Police Academy urgently appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene and enforce their reinstatement, citing a long-ignored court judgment.

In a letter addressed to the President and made public through their lawyer, Adetoye Adejola, the affected officers, many of whom joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1996, 1999, and 2000 pleaded for executive intervention to overturn what they described as forced retirements.

The appeal stems from a National Industrial Court judgment delivered on April 19, 2022, which nullified their compulsory retirements and ordered the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to reinstate them with full benefits.

Despite the ruling, the officers allege that:

  • Salaries were stopped.
  • Some were forcibly retired before reaching the statutory 35 years of service or age 60.
  • Others still in service were sidelined with no duties assigned.

Over three years later, the judgment remains unimplemented, prompting repeated complaints.

The lawyers highlighted President Tinubu's recent directive to withdraw police officers from VIP security details and redeploy them to frontline duties for crime fighting and community policing.

They argued that reinstating these experienced senior officers would provide valuable manpower to support this initiative:“In light of the directives, we respectfully wish to bring to Your Excellency’s attention the plight and potential value of some senior police officers who were compulsorily retired before attaining their due retirement age or statutory years of service.”

This plea comes amid ongoing concerns about police welfare in Nigeria, including separate campaigns by retired officers for improved pensions and exit from the Contributory Pension Scheme.

However, this specific group focuses on court-ordered reinstatement rather than pension reforms.

The development shows persistent challenges in implementing judicial decisions within the NPF and highlights manpower shortages amid rising security demands.
