Suspected armed bandits stormed the Old Oyo National Park Service (NPS) office in Oloka, Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State, on Tuesday night, January 6, 2026, killing at least five personnel and leaving others critically injured.
The assault occurred around 9:00 p.m., with the gunmen targeting officers on duty at the facility.
Reports indicate that some victims were shot, while others may have been burned, and the attackers fled with seized weapons into nearby forests.An anonymous eyewitness reported that several personnel were killed instantly, with survivors receiving urgent medical care.
The Conservator of the Park, Tesleem Kareem, confirmed the incident to reporters on Wednesday.
Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Adewale Osifeso (noted in some reports as DSP Ayanlade Olayinka), verified the attack, describing the perpetrators as unidentified armed men.
"Yes, there was an attack by yet-to-be-identified men against the men of the National Park," he stated.
Security forces have responded swiftly, with the Commissioner of Police and other service chiefs heading to the scene.
Tactical teams, Mobile Police Force units, and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) experts have been deployed to secure the area, restore order, and protect lives and property.
Authorities urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with ongoing investigations.
Oyo State continues to grapple with persistent security issues, including banditry in rural areas and attacks on public institutions, heightening concerns for the safety of law enforcement and conservation personnel.
