ADC Stakeholders Woo Makinde Amid Defection Rumours

Stakeholders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Oyo State have extended an open invitation to Governor Seyi Makinde to join their party amid persistent rumours of his potential defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Party leaders, however, emphasised that any new members, including the governor, must adhere strictly to the ADC's core principles of fairness, inclusiveness, internal democracy, and respect for the rule of law, warning against imposition, domination, or godfatherism.

A prominent ADC chieftain, Mrs. Bolanle Sarumi (alias Basa), stated that the party welcomes all Nigerians, including political heavyweights, but will not compromise its ideological foundation.

“We are a party that respects the rule of law and welcomes everybody,” Sarumi said. “If it is true that Governor Makinde intends to join our great party, he is welcome. But he must understand that the ADC operates on a clear ideology of fairness and equity. There is no room for domination or imposition.”

Oyo State ADC Chairman, Mr. Yinka Olona, echoed the sentiment, affirming that the party's doors are open for growth and alliances but its democratic culture remains non-negotiable.

“Our doors are open, but our principles are not negotiable,” Olona declared. “The ADC is not a party where one individual dictates for others. Every member has a voice, and decisions are taken collectively.”

Another party leader, Chief Niyi Aborisade, cautioned against sacrificing the ADC's ideals to attract influential figures, stressing that the party must not mirror the practices it criticises in the APC and PDP.

“The ADC must not become like the APC and PDP that we criticise daily,” Aborisade said. “We must practise what we preach. There must be no imposition, no godfatherism and no dictatorship.”

He further noted that while high-profile entrants could bolster the party, their influence should not undermine the efforts of grassroots members who have built the ADC over the years.

The ADC leaders reiterated their commitment to positioning the party as a credible alternative built on transparency, ideology, and participatory politics ahead of future elections.Meanwhile, the Oyo State PDP has firmly dismissed the defection rumours.

State Publicity Secretary, Mr. Michael Ogunsina, described the reports as false.“It is a lie. There is nothing like that,” Ogunsina stated.
