The military government of Burkina Faso has declared that it successfully thwarted a sophisticated plot to assassinate Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the country's transitional president, and destabilize the nation.
In a late-night televised address on January 6, 2026, Security Minister Mahamadou Sana revealed that intelligence services intercepted the operation in its final stages.
The plot, allegedly orchestrated by former interim leader Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba who was ousted by Traoré in a 2022 coup involved plans to kill the president either by shooting him at close range or using explosives at his residence after 11:00 p.m. on January 3.
The scheme reportedly extended beyond the assassination, targeting key institutions, civilian figures, and a drone-launch base to prevent foreign intervention.
Sana claimed the operation received partial funding from neighboring Ivory Coast, including transfers of around 70 million CFA francs (approximately $125,000).Damiba, currently in exile in Togo, has not responded to the accusations, nor has the government of Ivory Coast issued any comment.
This marks yet another alleged coup attempt against Traoré, who has faced multiple threats since seizing power amid escalating jihadist insurgency.
Authorities say arrests are ongoing, with investigations continuing. Sana reassured the public that the situation is under control and urged vigilance against further destabilization efforts.
The announcement comes as Burkina Faso grapples with ongoing security challenges, including widespread jihadist violence that has displaced millions.
Traoré's administration has distanced itself from former colonial power France, strengthening ties with Russia and regional allies Mali and Niger.
