A.A. Rano Nigeria Limited, owned by billionaire businessman Alhaji Auwalu Abdullahi Rano, has announced the rollout of Nigeria's first fully automated, unmanned fuel stations, set to begin operations in January 2026.
The innovative self-service stations feature digital smart pumping technology, allowing motorists to refuel and make instant contactless payments without attendants, operating 24 hours a day.
In a statement released in Kano, Alhaji Rano highlighted the partnership with Petrosoft Limited, a Nigerian tech firm specializing in downstream oil and gas solutions.
The collaboration will deploy Petrosoft's automated systems across AA Rano's over 200 retail outlets nationwide, including border areas with Niger, Chad, Benin, and Cameroon.
The technology promises greater transparency, ensuring customers receive exact volumes paid for, while reducing man-hour losses and enhancing efficiency.
Dr. Joshua Denila, CEO of Petrosoft, emphasized the project's use of locally developed technology built to international standards, addressing key challenges in Nigeria's fuel retail market.
However, the move has sparked concerns from petrol station workers, who warn of potential job losses amid the country's high unemployment rates.
