No political solution will stop us from impeaching Fubara - Rivers Assembly

The Rivers State House of Assembly has firmly rejected any political intervention in the ongoing impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, insisting the process will continue over allegations of gross misconduct.

Assembly spokesperson Enemi George stated on Thursday that previous political solutions have failed, emphasizing that the lawmakers are acting strictly on constitutional grounds rather than political pressure.

"We’ve had one too many political solutions," George said, describing the governor's alleged repeated violations as making further compromises untenable.

The proceedings commenced during plenary on January 8, 2026, with notices of gross misconduct served, citing issues including refusal to present the 2026 appropriation bill and unauthorized spending.

The assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, has given the governor seven days to respond.

This marks a renewed escalation in the protracted political crisis in Rivers State, amid lingering tensions between Fubara and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

A faction of the state's APC has opposed the move, warning of potential instability.
