Hon. Abdullahi Zubairu Abiya (also referred to as Abdullahi Zubairu Imam Abiya) has been appointed as the Acting State Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Kano State, following the expulsion of former chairman Hashimu Sulaiman Dungurawa.
The appointment was ratified by the NNPP State Executive Committee (SEC) during an emergency meeting at the party’s secretariat in Kano on December 30, 2025.
Barrister Yusuf Mukhtar, the party’s Assistant Legal Adviser, announced the decision, stating that it complied with the NNPP constitution.
The move stems from a resolution submitted by the Dawakin Tofa Local Government Executive Committee, which endorsed the expulsion of Dungurawa by his home Gargari Ward executives.
The ward accused Dungurawa of anti-party activities, including creating divisions, instigating internal crises, failing to pay party dues, and making abusive remarks against Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Party sources indicate the action aims to enforce discipline, enhance cohesion, and reposition the NNPP ahead of future elections.
In his reaction, Acting Chairman Abiya pledged fairness and justice for all members while reaffirming loyalty to national leader Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
However, Dungurawa has rejected his removal, calling it "baseless" and "child’s play," insisting he remains the legitimate chairman as only higher party organs can discipline a state chairman.
The development has deepened the ongoing crisis within the Kano NNPP chapter, fueled by rumors of Governor Yusuf's potential defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move opposed by Kwankwaso loyalists like Dungurawa.
Reports suggest tensions between factions aligned with the governor and those loyal to Kwankwaso, with the APC publicly welcoming any potential defectors.
