The Lagos State Government has officially cancelled the 2025 edition of the Greater Lagos Fiesta, an annual New Year's Eve celebration traditionally held on December 31 across multiple venues in the state.
The announcement was made on December 30, 2025, through a statement by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile.
The event, also known as Countdown 2026, typically features live performances by top Nigerian artists, fireworks, and large gatherings to usher in the new year.In place of the festivities, Governor Sanwo-Olu urged residents to dedicate the time to personal prayers for Nigeria, Lagos State, and its people.
He specifically called for prayers focused on continued prosperity, effective leadership, peace, productivity, and overall well-being.
Expressing optimism for the future, the governor stated that 2026 holds great promise for both the state and the nation. He encouraged Lagosians to maintain peace and harmony among themselves.
"On behalf of my family, I wish every resident of our dear State a happy and prosperous new year," Sanwo-Olu said.
"I want to assure you all that the year 2026 will be a better year for us in the State, as our administration is determined to work twice as hard to deliver the goods for the residents of the state."
The Greater Lagos Fiesta has long been a highlight of the state's cultural calendar, promoting tourism and the creative industry while providing free entertainment.
No explicit reason for the cancellation was provided in the official statement, though it shifts the emphasis from celebration to reflection as the year ends.
