Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, has extended heartfelt condolences to British-Nigerian boxing champion Anthony Joshua following a tragic road accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway that claimed the lives of two of his close friends and team members.
The incident occurred on Monday, December 29, 2025, when a Lexus SUV carrying Joshua and his entourage collided with a stationary truck near the Sinoma area in Sagamu, Ogun State.
Joshua sustained minor injuries and is stable in hospital, but his long-time strength and conditioning coach Sina Ghami and personal trainer Kevin Latif Ayodele tragically died in the crash.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan described the accident as "heart-wrenching and unacceptable," expressing deep sympathy for Joshua's loss.
“My heart goes out to Anthony Joshua at this very painful time. Losing two close friends in such a tragic manner is devastating," she said.
"I pray that God grants him strength and comfort, and that the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace.”
The senator seized the opportunity to highlight Nigeria's persistent road safety crisis, calling Nigerian highways "corridors of sorrow" where preventable crashes continue to claim thousands of lives annually due to weak enforcement, poor infrastructure, and delayed emergency responses.
She urged the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to intensify enforcement of traffic regulations without compromise, warning that "rules without enforcement are meaningless."
Akpoti-Uduaghan also called on the federal government to establish well-equipped rest stations and lay-bys along major highways to combat driver fatigue, and to create a dedicated highway emergency rescue system with rapid-response ambulances and trauma units.
“This tragedy should not be another headline we forget tomorrow," she emphasised. "It must serve as a turning point for serious highway safety reforms in Nigeria."
The senator reaffirmed her commitment to advocating legislative measures to prioritise road safety, stressing that treating it as a national emergency could save countless lives each year.
