Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, have rejected and returned a ₦100,000 cash transfer each, sent to their personal accounts as a Christmas/Yuletide bonus on the instructions of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The transfers hit their accounts on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, but the lawmakers immediately reversed the payments, labelling them "unsolicited, unapproved, and unconstitutional" for lacking legislative authorisation.
In a statement by Hon. Enemi Alabo George, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, the Assembly stressed that expenditures from the state's Consolidated Revenue Fund require prior approval from the legislature.
The lawmakers accused Governor Fubara of repeatedly bypassing due process in public spending since 2023, despite court rulings and constitutional provisions.
Unlike civil servants and pensioners who gratefully accepted the same ₦100,000 bonus, the Amaewhule-led faction recognised by courts as the legitimate Assembly returned the funds.
The incident shows the ongoing political standoff between Governor Fubara and the pro-Nyesom Wike lawmakers, with the House yet to receive the 2026 budget or commissioner nominees.
The Assembly has adjourned until January 26, 2026, and vowed to continue safeguarding public funds and upholding the constitution.
