President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday swore in five new Permanent Secretaries and Malam Aminu Yusuf as the substantive Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC) at a brief ceremony held in the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa.
The newly appointed Permanent Secretaries, representing each of Nigeria’s geopolitical zones except the South-South, are: Alhaji Abdulkarim Ozi Ibrahim (North Central)
- Dr John Chidiebere Ezeamama (South East)
- Dr Abdul Sule Usman Garba (North West)
- Dr Ishiyaku Musa Mohammed (North East)
- One additional appointee (South West zone, name not disclosed at the event)
The President also administered the oath of office to two newly appointed NPC Commissioners.
Immediately before the swearing-in, the Federal Executive Council, presided over by President Tinubu, observed a minute’s silence in memory of Ambassador Joy Uche Ogwu, Nigeria’s former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, who passed away at the age of 79.
Council members paid glowing tributes to the late diplomat, describing her as an icon of professionalism, patriotism and one of Nigeria’s finest voices on the global stage.
Present at the meeting were Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, and members of the cabinet.
The appointments are seen as part of ongoing efforts to inject fresh energy into the federal civil service and strengthen demographic planning ahead of the next national census.
